IFAR-X Challenge: Collaborative Aircraft Design
&
Early Career Network Conference 2023 (Paris, 20-23 June 2023)
To collaboratively evolve towards a Future Green Aviation meeting Flightpath 2050 Goals
IFAR, the International Forum for Aviation Research (Home - IFAR.AERO), is the network for aviation research establishments worldwide. Based on a voluntary, non- binding basis, IFAR aims to connect research organizations, to enable the information exchange and communication on aviation research activities.
IFAR X Challenge is handled by a group composed of young researchers from IFAR (less than 35 years old), which is working on the development of the interdisciplinary design of a new generation of aircraft in order to address the Future of the Green Aviation, and meeting the European Flightpath 2050 Goals. The Challenge technical activities cover:
- Novel Aeronautics Architecture. Involving novel airframe, technologies and operation concepts.
- Distributive design and analysis via collaborative platform accessible to all IFAR members.
- Activity using provided OPEN Source Framework without sharing codes or tools or proprietary information.
The operational concept of the IFAR X Challenge is illustrated below: Starting from a common objective of a novel environment friendly aircraft, participants will share their experience, knowledge, models and information (through a common language and an open source interface) on design methods, technologies, technical aspects related to ATM or flight operation. The challenge aims at delivering results especially in terms of fuel burn improvement, emission and noise reductions with emphasis on not sharing source codes or tools or any proprietary knowledge.
At the end of a 6-month sequence, the challenge participants are invited to meet and exchange information at the Early Career Network (ECN) Conference that will be held in Paris, June 20 -23 2023, hosted by ONERA in collaboration with the Paris Saclay Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (PSIA2), ONERA is a founding member of PSIA2. The conference will take place the same week as the Paris International Airshow (SIAE 2023), providing participants with the opportunity to experience the SIAE 2023.
The preparation of the challenge, preceding the ECN conference, will require a commitment of 50 person-hours effort per participant per organization to learn about collaborative framework and as per IFAR’s goals of educating young researchers. All the details regarding the organization and the way of working will be presented during the challenge kick-off meeting in January. Hereafter are the important dates and milestones:
